Scandinavian retreat. Memories of KABIN, an elevated cocktail bar in Hudson Square, NYC.

ABOUT

In Norway, cabins—or hytte—are an integral part of social culture. On any given Friday, you’re more likely to find Scandinavians sneaking off to these retreats than working late at their desks, and hytte are also a favorite place to spend long winter and summer holidays. At KABIN, we celebrate that draw to nature and good times among friends, creating an urban haven where New Yorkers can set their worries and schedules aside.

At the same time, our “cabin” isn’t your run-of-the-mill log home. Inspired by the simplicity, natural materials and zen-like beauty of Nordic design, KABIN feels like a breath of fresh air in downtown Manhattan. From afterwork drinks and cozy nightcaps, to seasonal celebrations—like Midsommar or Santa Lucia—KABIN is a place you’ll run into close friends, and where even newcomers will be welcomed and cared for.

Alex Tangen, found of KABIN, an elevated cocktail bar in Hudson Square, NYC.

Founded by Alex Tangen

Born to Norwegian parents, but raised in London, Alex’s bilingual and bicultural upbringing has always been intertwined with Nordic traditions and values. From summer breaks to winter holidays, her family’s seaside and mountain cabins in Norway—passed down over generations—have been a beloved sanctuary for as long as she can remember.

At the same time, Alex’s years in London fueled a passion for entertaining, with a particular affinity for the loyal community of regulars at UK pubs, as well as the city’s cosmopolitan cocktail scene. After studying business at The Wharton School and relocating to New York, she couldn’t help but notice how NYC’s social culture felt more transient and fast-paced. Inspired by the diversity and creative energy of her new hometown—but craving a consistent place to run into friends and shake off a long day—she began brainstorming a modern, cabin-inspired bar that would feel welcoming not just to Scandinavians, but to guests of all kinds.

KABIN is an organic evolution of all these influences: a modern perspective on Nordic design and culture, a community-oriented neighborhood bar, and an elevated cocktail destination. While the decor and menu will feel new and exciting to many New Yorkers, it is a place Alex hopes they will also feel refreshingly at home.
